SOLVED: Where Is Windows 10 Media Center

The short answer is that there will not be a “Media Center” add in for Windows 10 (Technology Preview or RTM).

At best Microsoft will allow the Windows 8 Media Center add in to function in Windows 10.  One Windows 10 Technology Preview useWindows-10-Media-Centerr already tried his Windows 8.1 Media Center key in Windows 10 and it appears to have worked, other than he was not able to activate it.

In 2011 the head of Microsoft Windows Division Steven Sinofsky provided the stats to justify killing the Media Center code:

Our opt-in usage telemetry shows that in July, Windows Media Center was launched by 6% of Windows 7 users globally with the heaviest usage in Russia, Mexico, and Brazil (frequency and time). However, most people are just looking around; only one quarter (25% of 6%) of these people used it for more than 10 minutes per session (individual averages)

If you are asking yourself, “Why would Microsoft kill programs and features they already have developed, like Windows Media Center, Windows DVD Maker…”, it boils down to cost and security.  As big as Microsoft is, they do not have unlimited resources.  There is a cost to even maintaining the existing code and ensuring it is bug free, not impacted by updates, and most importantly does not provide security holes that can/will be exploited.

The good news is that Windows Home Server will exist in a Windows 10 format likely several months after the general RTM of Windows 10.
